Vegetation management and landscaping specialist VMS Ltd has invested £23,000 in advanced diagnostic machinery, enabling clients to make informed decisions on tree safety and structural integrity via non-invasive assessments.
The company has purchased a PiCUS Sonic Tomograph, a specialist arboricultural decay detection tool that uses sounds waves to safely look inside a tree. By mapping hidden defects such as decay, cavities, and structural weaknesses, the technology reduces the need to cut or drill into trees.
VMS’ Arboricultural Consultancy Service will utilise the machine alongside its existing resistograph, a diagnostic tool that measures wood resistance, ensuring that a comprehensive internal health profile of the tree is delivered. It’s lead consultant, Mat Graham, commented: “Although we only launched the consultancy in September 2025, this investment shows our commitment to utilising the most up to date tools.
“It also gives us increased mobility, a higher quality scan and increased speed and efficiency in both data gathering and processing.
“The equipment also allows our clients to make well-informed safety decisions regarding their tree stock, by making invisible defects visible to the naked eye.”
